We have had our Orpington's from the very beginning. . .
As well as being one of our favourites, we have also have found them to be one of the most gentle and docile of breeds, making them great pets and egg layers alike for those whom delight in owning them.
Their eggs are a tinted - pink - brown colour and they can be expected to lay upwards of 250 eggs in their first years..
They are generally a very good forager, a large dual purpose bird that are greatly desired not only for their looks, but also for their easy going nature, not to mention their egg laying, and meat value.
They are big round & very fluffy to the point of disguising their lovely dark gray legs & they are far too heavy to even consider flying once fully mature!
Photo on the right shows two of our very own prized Black Orpington point of lay
pullets and there are more photo's below in our photo Gallery of many more of our own purebred Orpington breeding stock for your viewing pleasure!
White Orpington eggs are an off white - light pink/brown colour.
Great layers laying up to 260 + eggs per year in their early years!
Our White Orpington line was developed right here at Poultry Valley and form much of the basis of the white Orpingtons found in NZ now, although many other back yard breeders have done them a great injustice in type, by crossing them with other breeds [such as the Sussex] to gain the more desired white legs.
We are working on this here and making good progress while keeping their breed true to the Orpington type - unlike many others who are cross-breeding these beautiful big fluffy birds and selling them on as purebred!
This big soft fluffy docile & genital breed and are one of our most favorite breeds here & are highly sought after so it pays to order ahead. .
We keep only the Blue (Blue / Splash) Black and White colours now,
having on sold our buffs, as we found them to be very inconsistent producers!
We rate this beautiful friendly, large docile breed very highly as do many others whom own them, they are one of our most popular breeds here, and are very highly sought after.. therefore due to such high demand, more often than not we do have a waiting list, so the sooner you order our Orpington pullets the better the chance you will have to be next in line for our top quality birds..
We would not be without all our gorgeous Orpington's here @ Poultry Valley
and give them a full 5 star rating as we feel they greatly deserve.!

We also keep our very own White Orpington's which were developed right here @ Poultry Valley. . See them all here. .
Colours we keep are Black and Blue with the odd Splash.
The Splash colour being a sport from the blues, are something we do not specifically breed for, so do not run a separate pen of Splash here, they are a result of hatching blue eggs as per the genetic table below.
The Colour genetic combinations for resulting off spring are as follows:
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black & 25% Splash chicks
Black x Blue = 50% Black & 50% Blue chicks
Black x Black = 100% Black chicks
Black x Splash = 100% Blue chicks
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue & 50% Splash chicks
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash chicks
When breeding any Blue poultry, the resulting chicks do not all hatch out to be blue, as with any blue poultry no matter what the breed, the chicks that hatch out will be approx 50% blue, 25% black & 25% splash.
This is just the way all blue poultry genetics work, including in blue laced varieties as well as with blue ducks also. .
